About Jacob Lawrence
American Painter
(1917–2000)
Jacob Lawrence was an acclaimed African American painter best known for his dynamic portrayals of Black life, history, and culture. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and raised in Harlem, Lawrence developed a distinctive modernist style marked by vivid color, rhythmic composition, and powerful storytelling. His landmark Migration Series (1940–41), a collection of 60 panels, chronicles the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. As one of the first Black artists represented by a major New York gallery, Lawrence broke barriers and inspired generations of artists with his visual narratives of resilience and dignity.
