About Louise Nevelson
Abstract Expressionism / Assemblage
(1899–1988)
Louise Nevelson was an American sculptor best known for her monumental assemblages made from found wooden objects. Born in Ukraine and raised in the United States, Nevelson became a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism, developing a distinctive sculptural style defined by intricate compositions and monochromatic palettes — most famously in black, white, and gold. Her wall-sized installations, such as Sky Cathedral (1958), transform discarded materials into powerful architectural forms. A trailblazer for women in modern sculpture, Nevelson redefined the boundaries of abstraction and materiality in 20th-century art.
